After weeks of planning, sawing, sanding, polishing, painting, and assembling, yesterday was the much anticipated Pinewood Derby Race. Since Matthew's car was the Shark's theme, he wore a Shark's shirt under his uniform as well as his Shark's hat. He brought his finished car to the race wrapped in a towel so that nothing would happen to it. Moments before checking in, he put the final layer of graphite on the wheels and axles. The car weighed exactly 5.0 ounces - perfect! Matthew could barely sit still in anticipation of his race. Since he is a Webelos, his race was last. But being a good sport, he sat in the front row and cheered the other cars. I am sure he was also sizing up the competition for the final fastest of the fastest race. When the Webelos race was announced, he stood right in front of the finish line so he wouldn't miss a thing. Not only did his car win FIRST place in the first heat, it NEVER lost. Not even once. He raced in his class - first place. He raced the first place winners in all classes - first place. He raced the dad's cars (which do not have a weight limit and tend to weigh quite a bit more that 5.0 ounces) - winner! He even raced cars from last year including his own winning car - FIRST PLACE. He was thrilled!!! He was given a medal for his uniform, a certificate, and a trophy. By the end of the day, all the cubs were asking when he was leaving scouts. They want their turn at winning, but they know they won't get a chance when Matthew is there:).
Matthew took this video himself!
